February 2012  This month, the Cultural Center is pleased to welcome the return of some our popular Monday noontime concerts. On February 6, the Chicago Chamber Musicians present their monthly "First Monday" performance. And on February 27, the fourth Monday of the month, the Musicians Club of Women present their "Award WInners in Concert" series.  These respective concerts will continue monthly  on the first and fourth Mondays.  This month also features a Sunday Salon event, and of course the ongoing Dame Myra Hess Memorial concerts on Wednesdays. The gorgeous rooms of the Cultural Center will be filled with  exquisite music in February!        VISUAL ARTS    Morbid Curiosity: The Richard Harris Collection      Through July 8, 2012      A deadly obsession takes hold of the Chicago Cultural Center this winter with the arrival of one of its largest exhibitions to date, Morbid Curiosity: The Richard Harris Collection.    This exhibition  showcases nearly 1,000 works that explore the iconography of death across a variety of artistic, cultural and spiritual practices from 2000 B.C.E. to the present day. Richard Harris, a resident of Riverwoods, Il. who has been an art collector for 40 years, has gathered his provocative collection from all corners of the world. . Nominations are accepted February 1 through March 15, and nominators must be 21 years or older. Two nominees from each of the more than 1,100 Kohl’s stores nationwide will win a $50 Kohl’s gift card, and more than 200 will win regional scholarships worth $1,000 toward post-secondary education. Ten national winners will be awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships for post-secondary education and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf.  

 

Through the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program, Kohl’s aims to honor young volunteers who have made a positive impact on their communities. Since the program began in 2001, Kohl’s has recognized more than 15,000 kids with more than $3 million in scholarships and prizes. In 2012, Kohl’s celebrates its 12^th year of rewarding young volunteers.

 

In 2011, Kohl’s honored national winner Sarah Kladar, 12, who sold approximately 5,000 dishtowels and with the nearly $50,000 raised, helped financially-burdened families pay for surgery-related expenses that were not covered by insurance. Regional winner Jaimus Ready, 8, was recognized for assembling and sending more than 350 care packages to soldiers in Afghanistan filled with candy, clothing and homemade cards from local school children.
